Courses That Challenge Students Values and Beliefs: A Conference for USF Faculty

Friday, February 7, 9:00 - 4:00 p.m. Location: Holiday Inn, 2701 East Fowler Avenue

The Center will sponsor a special conference in support of instructors who teach courses that challenge students values and beliefs, courses that include sensitive topics, such as race, gender, ethnicity, religion and other controversial subjects. Many instructors have told us that these courses are thought-provoking but also challenging in many ways. Our featured speaker will be Professor Megan Boler of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Professor Boler has written about the Òpedagogy of discomfort,Ó the place of emotion in the classroom, the effect of emotion on learing. USF faculty will lead discussions on classroom conflict management, students as community, the relationship of writing and values, and the question of institutional support for instructors who teach courses dealing with sensitive topics. Seating is somewhat limited with priority given to faculty. Graduate students are encouraged to register on a space available basis.
