Involving Students:
Using Active Learning Strategies
in University Classes
Monday, July 22 - Friday, August 2, 2002
USF faculty will receive a $1,500 stipend
APPLICATION DEADLINE: June 21, 2002
Introduction:
Numerous experts and several national reports support Arthur
Chickering and Zelda Gamson's conclusion that, "Learning is not a spectator sport .
. . students must talk about what they are learning, write about it, relate it to past
experiences, apply it to their daily lives. They must make what they learn part of
themselves." To help faculty address this challenge, we are pleased to offer our 10th
summer workshop on using active learning strategies.
Description: The use of active learning strategies will be demonstrated and
modeled as participants explore such issues as (1) what is active learning and why is
it important? (2) what obstacles commonly prevent faculty from using active
learning strategies? and (3) how can these obstacles be overcome? Participants will
also learn practical ways to (1) enhance traditional lectures, (2) refine their
questioning and discussion-leading skills, (3) use writing activities to enhance
comprehension and retention, (4) design cooperative learning experiences, (5)
employ case method teaching, and (6) integrate active learning strategies into
technology-enhanced teaching.
Expectations:
Workshops will meet daily from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be
on your own from 12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m. IMPORTANT: Participants should not
have other personal or professional obligations scheduled during workshop hours.
A detailed workshop schedule and additional information will be sent to each
participant. E-mail Jim Eison (jeison@admin.usf.edu) or phone us at 974-2576
with your questions.

information including your college and department, rank, campus and home
addresses and phone numbers, E-mail address, (2) a statement of how you hope to
